If you’re one of the many pet parents interested in CBD for your pets, this is big news. CBD has been growing in popularity among pet owners across North America, though some remain hesitant — mainly because their local vet often can’t discuss pets and CBD openly.
So, is that about to change?
Pets and CBD: A Gag Order
The internet is an amazing resource when it comes to learning about pets and CBD. You can find information on types of products, general usage, and experiences shared by other pet owners. Some people also turn to providers or online communities like Facebook groups to ask questions.
What you can’t do in many states is ask your vet.
This is a problem because the very person you’d normally turn to for advice may be legally restricted from discussing CBD products for animals. Even though the 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the list of Schedule I controlled substances, many states limit what veterinarians can say about CBD. In some cases, discussing it could put their license at risk.
The American Veterinary Medical Association states:
“Under current federal and state law, veterinarians may not administer, dispense, prescribe, or recommend cannabis or its products for animals.”
Some vets may still be willing to talk about CBD, but many avoid it due to the legal gray area.
Hope on the Horizon
Earlier this month, a bill was introduced in the Michigan House of Representatives that would allow vets to discuss CBD products with pet owners if they choose to do so.
Medical marijuana became legal in Michigan in 2008, and hemp and recreational marijuana became legal in 2018. However, vets (and pets) were not included under these laws, leaving their hands tied.
The bill, House Bill 5085, is sponsored by Rep. Gregory Markkanen and supported by testimony from several prominent veterinarians in the state. It states:
“Sec. 18817. (1) A veterinarian may consult with an owner on the use of marihuana or CBD oil on an animal of the owner pursuant to rules promulgated under this section.”
This is a major step forward. If passed, veterinarians in Michigan will finally have the option to speak openly with pet owners about CBD products.
The bill still needs to clear both the House and Senate and be signed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. While there’s currently no outspoken opposition, it could be the first step in a broader movement to allow vets to discuss pets and CBD across the country.
Fingers (and paws) crossed!
