CBD for Horses With Arthritis: A Natural Option Worth Exploring

You know your horse’s usual stride, their energy, and how quickly they come to the gate. When those things change, you notice.

Maybe they’re moving more slowly. Maybe they seem uncomfortable during routines that used to be easy. When joint pain becomes a concern, you want to help them feel better—and you want to understand what you’re putting into their body.

For horse owners looking beyond another prescription, CBD is a plant-derived option worth learning about. And there is early research exploring its potential for horses with arthritis.

Arthritis Shouldn’t Be Dismissed as “Just Getting Older”

Osteoarthritis, also called degenerative joint disease, can involve pain, inflammation, and reduced mobility. Affected horses may become reluctant to move or show discomfort during handling. These changes deserve attention and a veterinary assessment, even when they develop gradually.

Whether your horse is still working or enjoying retirement, their everyday comfort matters.

Wanting Options Beyond Pharmaceuticals Is Reasonable

Medication can play an important role in managing arthritis. But owners are also right to ask about side effects, long-term use, and whether additional approaches might help.

Phenylbutazone, commonly called bute, is widely used for equine pain and inflammation. Researchers studying CBD acknowledge that continuous, long-term use of anti-inflammatory medication can create problems in some horses. That concern is one reason to explore additional approaches with your veterinarian.

You shouldn’t have to feel uncomfortable asking: What else could we consider?

CBD belongs in that conversation. Its plant origin doesn’t make it risk-free, but its potential deserves a closer look.

What Does the Research Say About CBD for Horses?

A 2024 study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science examined 20 horses with mild osteoarthritis.

Both groups received bute for five days. One group also received CBD for 14 days. Although pain scores improved in both groups, the horses receiving CBD had lower pain scores later in the study. Researchers reported encouraging results for comfort and quality of life when CBD was added to conventional treatment.

For owners searching for more options, that’s meaningful.

It’s also preliminary. A small, two-week study cannot tell us how every horse will respond or establish long-term safety. And because CBD was used alongside medication, the findings don’t show that it can replace prescribed treatment.

CBD, Inflammation, and Joint Comfort

The relationship between CBD and inflammation is another area researchers are exploring.

In the same study, changes in certain blood measurements suggested a possible reduction in the ongoing inflammatory process. Those findings offer a reason for further investigation, but they don’t prove that CBD consistently controls joint inflammation.

For owners, the practical question is whether CBD could have a place in an individual horse’s care plan. That decision should account for the horse’s diagnosis, current medications, and response over time.

Be Particular About What You Give Your Horse

If you’re exploring CBD because you want a thoughtful approach to your horse’s care, carry that same care into choosing a product.

Look for clearly listed ingredients, understandable CBD concentrations, and accessible independent lab results. Ask questions about cannabinoid content and testing for contaminants. A label should help you understand what you’re buying.

And bring that information to your veterinarian before starting CBD or changing existing medication.
