Finding the Right CBD for Your Pet
Your 12-pound dog and your horse probably shouldn’t start with the same bottle.
That might sound obvious, but if you’ve never shopped for pet CBD before, the different bottles and milligram numbers can make a simple decision feel complicated. And when it’s for your pet, you don’t want to guess. You want to know what you’re giving them and why you chose it.
If you’re still deciding whether CBD belongs in your pet’s routine, start with our post, Why Pet Owners Choose CBD—and Why They Choose Source. If you’re ready to look at the products, let’s walk through the choices together.
First, what are you looking for?
Maybe your dog is getting older and you’re thinking more about their comfort. Maybe storms or travel are hard on them. Maybe you’ve been curious about CBD for a while and want to learn whether it could fit into the care you already give them.
There isn’t one right reason to ask. We’ve had these conversations with people who know every detail of their pet’s routine—and who notice immediately when something changes.
If that change is new or concerning, talk with your veterinarian first. They can help you figure out what’s going on. If your pet takes medication or has a health condition, check with them before introducing CBD, too.
Should I choose an oil or a salve?
Think about how you plan to use the product.
Our pet oils are the option people usually ask about when they’re considering CBD as part of their pet’s routine. We offer several strengths because pets come in very different sizes, and owners want a bottle that makes sense for theirs.
Our pet salve is applied to the skin. It’s something pet owners may choose when they want a topical product to keep on hand. If your pet has a wound, ongoing irritation, or an area that looks infected, please have your veterinarian look at it. We never want a product to delay care your pet needs.
You may find that one product fits what you’re looking for. You don’t need to put together a whole collection to start.
What do the milligram numbers mean?
Our pet oils come in 200mg, 500mg, and 1,000mg strengths. That number is the total CBD in the bottle; it isn’t an instruction to give your pet that amount.
The choices are there because a little dog and a much larger dog have different needs. The highest number isn’t automatically the “best” bottle. What matters is understanding how much CBD is in the serving you’re measuring.
You don’t have to do that math in your head. Our CBD dosing calculator lets you enter your pet’s weight, choose a support level and bottle strength, and see the corresponding amount in milligrams, milliliters, and dropper markings. It’s a handy way to understand the numbers on the bottle, and you can discuss the result with your veterinarian before giving CBD to your pet.
What about horses?
For many of you, your horse is every bit as much a pet as the dog sleeping on your couch. We offer 2,000mg and 5,000mg equine oils for these much larger family members.
Some horse owners also keep our pet salve in their grooming supplies. As always, if your horse has a new health concern or an injury, your veterinarian should be part of the conversation.
And cats?
We haven’t forgotten them. Cats are smaller, and they can have their own health considerations, so choosing carefully matters. If you’re thinking about CBD for your cat, start by talking with your veterinarian, especially if your cat takes medication. Then we can help you understand the pet oils we offer.
The company behind the bottle matters, too
When you buy something for a pet you love, it’s fair to ask questions. What’s in it? Who made it? Can I see the lab results? Will someone help me if I’m confused?
Source began in 2014 with $800. We’ve grown by talking with customers and standing behind what we make. Our products are made in small batches with full-spectrum hemp extract, and our lab results are available for you to review.
We know your pet doesn’t get to read the label or ask us questions. You do that for them. We take that seriously.
