Microdosing is a buzz word in wellness and research circles right now, particularly with regard to alternative or non-conventional approaches. We’re hearing it a lot in conversations around psychedelics (such as psilocybin) and the research being done surrounding these practices.
But what about CBD microdosing? Is it a thing? And if it is, is there any reason someone might choose it versus taking 1–2 servings daily?
Let’s explore microdosing in general and discuss why someone might choose to apply this approach to CBD (and how to do it).
What Is Microdosing?
Microdosing refers to the act of taking small amounts of a substance frequently throughout the day, rather than taking a larger amount at much larger intervals.
For example, typically you take something in the morning, intending for it to last for a sustained amount of time. You then take it again at night for a similar experience.
With microdosing, you split those two servings up into much smaller amounts and take those smaller amounts at more regular, shorter intervals throughout the day.
The idea with this approach is that these smaller amounts may help maintain a more consistent routine throughout the day and potentially avoid taking larger amounts at once.
CBD Microdosing: The Basics
As you’ve probably already guessed, CBD microdosing involves taking small amounts of CBD consistently throughout the day. It doesn’t mean you change how much you normally take. Instead, it means splitting up your usual daily amount into smaller amounts taken more frequently.
For example, if you currently take:
- 5 milligrams a day, divide it into two 2.5 mg servings
- 10 milligrams a day, divide it into four 2.5 mg servings
- 20 milligrams a day, divide it into eight 2.5 mg servings
- 50 milligrams a day, divide it into ten 5 mg servings
What matters here is precision and consistency over time. You want to keep the amounts the same and space them out as evenly as possible throughout the day.
Depending on your personal preferences and how CBD fits into your daily routine, microdosing may be an approach worth exploring.
Is CBD Microdosing for You?
CBD routines are highly individual, and serving size preferences can vary from person to person.
Especially if you’re just starting out, microdosing can offer an alternative way to better understand how CBD fits into your routine. You can always try a microdosing schedule before moving to a more traditional routine.
In this case, you might start by halving your usual daily amount and dividing that into 2–4 smaller servings. If that feels like a good fit, you can continue with that amount. If not, you can gradually adjust. If it feels like too much, you can reduce it again.
Microdosing may also appeal to those who have been using CBD for a long time and want to reassess their routine to ensure they’re using an amount that feels right for them. Some people report needing less CBD over time rather than more, and microdosing can be one way to explore that preference.

Will microdosing work for you? There’s really only one way to find out: try it.
For some people, microdosing won’t be the preferred way to incorporate CBD into their day. For others, it may feel like a better fit based on schedule, consistency, or personal preference.
At this time, there isn’t much research that looks specifically at microdosing CBD. Much of the existing research focuses on larger, less frequent amounts, which doesn’t tell us much about smaller amounts taken more often.
That said, limited research doesn’t mean people don’t find value in this approach. As interest in CBD continues to grow, future research may provide more insight into different usage patterns.
