Does CBD Oil Need to Be Refrigerated (& Other CBD Oil Storage Tips)

So you’ve bought your CBD oil and plan to take advantage of all it has to offer. Great. But once you’ve opened that bottle, then what? Does CBD oil need to be refrigerated? What’s the best place to keep it?

For your CBD oil to last as long as possible, there are some CBD oil storage tips you’ll want to follow. And speaking of how long it will last – we’ll get to that too.

CBD Oil Storage

Just like any natural compound, CBD can deteriorate and break down over time. It doesn’t last forever. And would you really trust it if it did? By storing your CBD properly, you can preserve both its cannabinoid content and its other beneficial elements like terpenes and flavonoids as well!

When it comes to CBD oil storage, our best advice it to keep it in a spot with a stable, but low, temperature. Keep it away from extreme light, heat, or moisture. A dry pantry is a perfect place for storing your CBD oil – preferably one not next to a major appliance.

**We keep ours (both human and pet) in the same cupboard as our other dog supplements. This also happens to be the spice cupboard. Easy to access, but out of the heat and sunlight.

A good quality product will come in an airtight, dark glass bottle or stainless steel container. That’s done for a reason – well, a few reasons actually – but the main reason is that it protects it from exposure to sunlight. That sunlight can cause the cannabinoid content to degrade. And if it doesn’t close properly, the oxygen can lead to the breakdown of cannabinoids as well.

Keep it in that original container. You don’t want to transfer it into a plastic container because chemicals from the plastic can seep into the oil. Also skip reactive metal containers, like copper or iron. These can cause a reaction with the oil, which is also not great.

Does CBD Oil Need to be Refrigerated?

Does CBD oil need to be refrigerated? No, in most cases, you don’t need to keep it in the fridge. The only time we might recommend it is if you live in a hot, humid place with no A/C. That said, lots of people like to do this because they believe it helps the CBD last longer. Whether or not this is true is still up for debate. CBD has a decent shelf life to begin with, but it won’t hurt your oil to store it there.

One thing you might notice if you keep your CBD oil in the fridge is that if it gets too cold, it can thicken up. This isn’t a big deal, it may just mean running it under some warm water before using. You can also leave it on the counter for a little while to bring it back down to room temperature.

How Long Will CBD Last?

If stored properly, how long can you expect your CBD oil to last?

As we mentioned, CBD oil does have a shelf life. And any reliable CBD product should have an expiration date on its label. Typically, a high quality CBD oil will last 1-2 years, so check that expiration date.
