Hemp Oil vs CBD Oil: What’s the Difference?

hemp oil vs cbd oil

Hemp oil vs CBD oil. We hear these 2 oils incorrectly referred to all the time. And we get it, the whole concept can be a bit confusing.

No, CBD oil isn’t the same as hemp oil, even though it comes from hemp. And while there are definite benefits to both, there’s a really important difference.

Both are great, but if you’re trying to reap the maximum benefits of CBD oil, hemp oil won’t deliver, so you’ll want to know what that difference is.

What is Hemp Oil?

Hemp oil comes from, yes, you guessed it, the hemp plant.

It comes mainly from the seeds of the plant. The seeds contain little to no CBD and no THC. Hemp oil is similar to many other carrier oils in that it’s a cold-pressed extract from those seeds. This method of extraction is similar to how olive oil and coconut oil are made.

Since hemp seeds don’t contain any THC, the extracted oil doesn’t contain any either.

Many consider hemp oil a superfood and it’s great for adding nutritional value to your diet. It’s high in nutrients, fatty acids, and healthy bioactive compounds.

Lots of people also use hemp oil for skin care, since it’s a powerful moisturizer that doesn’t clog your pores.

Hemp is usually much cheaper than CBD as well, and often comes in much larger bottles.

If you’re unsure if you’re getting hemp oil vs CBD, and are looking for hemp, look for these terms on the label:

  • Hemp seed oil
  • Virgin hemp oil
  • Cannabis sativa (hemp) seed oil
  • Hemp oil

What is CBD Oil?

Cannabinoid (CBD) oil also comes from the hemp plant, hence the confusion. But instead of the seeds, CBD is found in the highest concentrations in the stalk and flowers of the hemp plant.

There are various methods of extraction, including CO2 (the cleanest – and our favorite) and liquid solvent extraction (which can result in leftover solvents in your CBD). Both of these methods isolate the cannabinoids from the plant.

Many (including us, of course) consider CBD to be a provider of many health benefits. People often take it for that reason, not as a dietary supplement.

If you’re still a little fuzzy about hemp oil vs CBD oil when shopping, and are looking for CBD, look for these terms on the label:

  • CBD oil
  • Cannabinoid oil
  • Hemp-derived CBD oil
  • A MG count on the label (eg. 200 MG)

Final Thoughts

Hemp oil and CBD are two totally different compounds. They come from different parts of the hemp plant, have different makeups, and different benefits. Make sure you’re getting the right one.
