CBD Safety: Side Effects, Dosage, and Safety Profile

CBD is currently one of the most studied cannabinoids. And with over 100 different cannabinoids identified, that’s really saying something.

Much of that scientific interest comes as a result of the rising popularity and usage of CBD oil. So, what does that science tell us about CBD safety? Are there concerns regarding dependancy or overuse? And what about side effects? Will the continuous use of CBD result in any undesired health effects you should be aware of?

Let’s answer these questions!

CBD Safety

Let’s start by saying that research tells us CBD is incredibly safe to use. But don’t just take our word for it. The World Health Organization (WHO) has noted that CBD is “generally well-tolerated with a good safety profile.” They’ve even made it clear that “there is no evidence of recreational use of CBD, or any public health-related problems.”

One of the biggest concerns when it comes to CBD safety is the question of whether or not you can you overdose on CBD.

Thankfully, that one is easy to answer. To date, there are no known reports of a fatal overdose caused by CBD oil. In fact, the WHO has stated that “in humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential,” even at doses as high as 1500 mg CBD per day.

So, extensive research has found that people using CBD do not need to worry about developing a dependancy for it, which is so important, especially considering many are turning to it as a safer alternative to pharmaceuticals.

Dosage Tips

Another one of the most common questions we’re asked with regard to CBD safety is “how much CBD oil should I take.”

Now, it’s important to note that CBD oil dosage amounts are not an exact science. Everyone is different, and so are the experiences they have with CBD oil. That includes how much works for them. CBD dosage guidelines are based on the average dose people find works for them.

If you’re just starting out, our best advice is to start with a lower dose and work your way up. This isn’t for safety reasons though – just to help you find your perfect dose. Sometimes less works for people, others may need a little more. It depends on various factors – and weight is just one of those factors. Others include genetics and metabolism.

Still, for many, our Dosage Calculator is a good place to start. Start by entering your weight, and the calculator will tell you how much CBD oil to take.

CBD Safety Profile: Side Effects?

Now, no conversation about safety would be complete without an examination of any potential side effects. Are there any you should be aware of before starting out with CBD?

The most comprehensive results on CBD side effects come from the studies done for Epidiolex, the FDA-approved CBD drug for childhood epilepsy. During clinical trials, children aged 2 to 18 were given CBD daily for 14 weeks. These doses were high – about 1,360 mg for a 150 pound adult, more than you’d find in the average bottle of CBD. Yes, the entire bottle.

In most cases, any side effects showed up in the first few weeks of the trial. Thankfully, after dosages stabilized, any adverse symptoms typically went away. Also, it was noted that decreasing the daily dose helped to decrease the side effects.

So, what side effects were reported in the clinical trials? The most common were:

  • Tiredness/fatigue
  • Decreased appetite
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Altered liver enzymes

**Remember, those were at super high doses.

Other CBD oil side effects that have been reported (outside the Epidiolex study) include dry mouth and diarrhea, but again, the instances are small.

Final Thoughts

While naysayers use CBD safety as a way to try and dissuade people from trying this celebrated cannabinoid, it’s clear the claims are baseless. Science proves that. Based on numerous studies, as well as extensive reviews done by the World Health Organization, we can say, with great confidence, that CBD is safe.

If you’re considering it for yourself, but have been worried about safety, rest assured, when it comes to CBD, you’re in good hands.
